What is the International Company of Cuban Dances?

The company was founded in 2022, we are a team of dancers from around Europe who are passionate about traditional Afro-Cuban dances. Our goal is to train and perform the traditional folkloric Cuban dances outside of Cuba. Find out more about our teachers on our about page. To get an impression of class check out our Instagram.

How can I join the Company?

There is no formal audition day or audition task. The audition process happens over the course of several sessions if you have shown an interest in becoming part of the company. In order to do that you can mention it to Leonardo or one of the members of the organization.

You have to attend a minimum of three sessions (weekends) during which the teachers will watch you dance and assess your level. During these sessions you will take part in the academy training classes with other students. After the three sessions the teachers will decide whether or not you can integrate the Company or if you should continue in the academy for a while longer.

If you integrate the company the teachers/Leonardo will tell you where you are situated compared to the rest of the group.

How can I join the Academy?

The academy is open to everyone who wants to join us for the first time. You are welcome to continue in the academy if you don’t feel ready to perform yet, or if you don’t think you will be able to join very regularly. If your main goal is to simply train and become better at Afro-Cuban dances, you can also stay as a student of the academy.

What are the prerequisites to join?

These are not beginners classes or workshops targeted at beginners. You are required to already have knowledge of Afro-Cuban dances meaning: Yoruba, Arara, Palo, Makuta, Yuka and Rumba. The training does not cover the basic steps or rhythms so it’s best if you’ve taken a minimum of 2 years classes prior to joining or have had enough basic training to be able to follow along in a class.

This applies both to Academy members as well as Company members. The goal of the Academy is to develop people to be ready to join the Company, which is why a minimum level is required.

I am a teacher, do I have to audition?

Yes everyone has to go through the audition process. We appreciate that people have been dancing for years and many of you are teachers, but the process has to be fair and therefore it’s the same for everyone.

Where does the training take place?

In different cities across Europe thanks to the help of our students. You can check out our next training dates here.

Who are the teachers?

They are Leonardo Moya, Sergio Larrinaga, Arelys Savon and Miresei Morales. All of them are former principle dancers of the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba and were trained at the Conjunto too. Find out more about them here.

How long are the training sessions?

We train for 6h on Saturday and 6h on Sunday. We aim to start at 13h on Saturday and end at 16h on Sunday in time for everyone to arrive and leave from the location.

What do you do during the training sessions?

We usually do a combination of singing, Yoruba technique, followed by either specific Orishas, Palo, Arara, Rumba and also traditional dances such as mambo, cha cha cha, son etc. This varies from weekend to weekend but the aim is to cover everything we will need to know. People who are part of the company will focus on rehearsing choreographies.

What are you working on/what are the projects?

At the moment we have various projects including a few smaller performances between now and end of 2024, and a larger performance of our show Raices Cubanas in December 2024. On an ongoing basis we are both looking for and accepting new opportunities.

What is the level of commitment?

Once you are in the Company and working towards our performance, we ask that you attend every month. You can miss only one training weekend between now and then. You have to commit to learning the choreographies and practising on your own to optimize the time we have during the weekends. We will all be performing more than one choreography.

What is the cost?

Prices are between EUR 120 for early birds and EUR 160 for last minute purchases

Do I need to arrange my own accommodation?
